As you probably know it yourself already, antibiotics are medications that are used for treating different bacterial conditions. They are inefficient at treating any other type of illnesses as they have no effect on viruses or parasites. However, when it comes to bacterial infections, they are the only solution, luckily a very efficient one. There are many different classes of antibiotics and the mere listing of all of them would take up an article that is much bigger than this one. All of these antibiotics act differently and they all treat certain strains of bacteria, while being totally ineffective against other strains.
Keflex belongs to the class of antibiotics known as cephalosporin antibiotics and these are the most commonly used antibiotics nowadays. After them, the most commonly used antibiotic class is the oldest one, which is the penicillin class of antibiotics. There is a whole variety of other antibiotics and they are all used to treat bacterial infections.
When it comes to medical conditions that are caused by bacteria, the list is near-endless. From infections of urinary tract, strep throat, pneumonia to infections of the middle ear, infections of wounds, skin and bones, etc. As there are so many conditions that can be caused by bacteria, there is probability that pregnant women might be in need of an antibiotic during their pregnancy.
The truth is that different antibiotics have different effects on the human fetus. There are for example antibiotics that have been linked with hearing loss in babies if their mothers took them while pregnant, the most famous of these being the streptomycin. There are some antibiotics such as tetracyclines that should not be used during pregnancy as they might affect the bones and the teeth of the baby, as well as cause some other birth defects. Other antibiotics, such as sulfonamide and nitrofuran derivatives may cause some other birth defects.
The biggest problem with the use of antibiotics during pregnancy is that there is simply not enough data to go on. The good news here is that Keflex is an antibiotic that has been with us for a long time, belonging to the first-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, which means that there has been enough time to study the safety of Keflex during pregnancy. Over the course of years, no evidence has been found that the use of Keflex during pregnancy is going to harm the health of the fetus in any way. It has also been found that it does pass into milk to some extent but that it will pose no risk for the health of a nursing child.
Other antibiotics, besides Keflex that are considered safe for use during pregnancy include other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin antibiotics, as well as erythromycin. However, always keep in mind that you should discuss the use of any antibiotic with your doctor in case you are pregnant, as this is the best way to ensure the safety of your baby
